Our Annual Fall Training is a faith-based event for ESL teachers, ESL assistants, ministry workers, or anyone working with newcomers.
Join us on Saturday, October 4 in person at West Springs Church, Calgary, AB for a time of learning, connecting and collaborating with other like-minded individuals.

About Our Speakers

Plenary Speaker

Erich Wong, Intercultural Ministries Associate Pastor, Foothills Alliance Church

Biography: Erich was born and raised in Suriname, located in the Caribbean. During his university years, he moved to the Netherlands, where he discovered God’s call to full-time ministry.
Today, Erich serves as an Intercultural Ministry Pastor at Foothills Alliance Church and as a chaplain at Calgary Christian School. He also serves as the President of the Canadian Bible Society, Calgary Chapter.

Erich is deeply passionate about teaching the Word of God and is committed to equipping people of all backgrounds and cultures to grow in faith and live out the gospel in their everyday lives. Erich is married with two little kids, and this summer they kicked off a sweet new adventure—trying out as many donut shops in Calgary as possible!

Topic: Generations that will seek God faithfully
Synopsis: God is at work! The harvest is here and the time is now—Canada’s growing cultural mosaic holds a rare opportunity to shape a generation that will seek God with passion and pass on a living faith to the next.

Workshop Option 1

Katherine Milum, Pastor for New Immigrants and Refugees. New Canadian Hub / Centre for the City
Biography: As Pastor for New Immigrants and Refugees, Katherine provides leadership to the New Canadian Hub of the church’s Centre for the City, which provides English classes and supportive community for newcomers to Canada. A life-long learner, she is working towards a Master of Intercultural Ministry at Ambrose Seminary. She is a Licensed Minister with the Evangelical Missionary Church of Canada.
Katherine deeply appreciates the privilege of interacting with and learning from many people from around the world as well as seeing how God uses a community of truly extraordinary volunteers to share his love. She also enjoys contemplative walking, reading, tea with good friends, baking, and gardening.
Topic: Communicating Well Across Cultures
Synopsis: An interactive workshop designed to help you understand and serve more effectively with new immigrants and refugees from different cultural backgrounds. Learn how differences in cultural values can create barriers to effective communication and how you can navigate those differences.

Workshop Option 2

Shelley McLean, English as a Second Language Instructor

Biography:

Shelley has been teaching English as a Second Language since the year 2007. She started out as a volunteer teaching for University of Calgary students and as a result became acquainted with CESLM through attending many of the workshops they offered.
She has taught professionally since 2008, having graduated with a BA with TESOL major at Alberta Bible College. She has taught for private schools in Calgary, a Canadian off-shore school in China for two years, four years teaching at a University in China; three weeks teaching English to a group of missionaries in Thailand; she taught for one year in Edmonton, she taught a one month course to Japanese students at the University of Lethbridge, one year in the Taber/Vauxhall area for a group of Mennonite ladies.
With the many years of teaching Shelley has learned to master the art of developing lesson plans and is looking forward to passing on the information about developing lessons she has learned and is still learning.

Topic: Lesson Planning
Synopsis: We will walk through the basics of developing a lesson plan to meet the needs of the students.
